"Glocke" (2020 (2022)) is a sculpture made of black rubber. In his work, Heerich is interested in the ambivalences and liminal tensions that exist simultaneously within objects or situations. The bell, for example, has accompanied people for thousands of years as a warning signal as well as a ritual object rung for spiritual contemplation and meditation. The sculpture reflects the tension between the theoretical construction of an ideal bell and the practical knowledge of the traditional foundries with which the artist collaborated. Heerich transfers this abstracted image of the resonating body to the insulating material of rubber, completely inverting any functionality. The bell rests on the floor, revealing the weight of the material. Rubber is a recurring material in Heerich's work, reflecting its multiple functions in the organization of society. It is a product of historical processes such as colonialism and industrialization. As an intermediate layer in mechanical constructions, rubber dampens, absorbs friction, and is usually invisible. At the same time, it is reminiscent of fetish objects and contrasts with the symbolism of the bell as a liturgical device. With "Glocke", Heerich emphasizes rubber as a protagonist of historical developments and provokes the viewer to consider the relationship between body, sound, form and space.
