The wall work Hierophany (2019) is comprised of thousands of black and white dice, stacked, line by line, to form an image of a specific mathematical modeling, the cellular automaton. This primitive abstract simulation generates complex patterns on the basis of relatively simple algorithms, which Troika transfers into the spatial arrangement of the colors, thus translating algorithms into analogue reality. While the algorithms are an expression of rapid technological and social change, in which simulations predict our everyday reality, the dice traditionally stand as a symbol of unpredictable events, chance and luck. Troika transfers digital structures back into the physical world and thus reveal how technological progress and humanity’s relationship to perceptible reality influence one another.
