“Not for Navigation” is a series in which Ju Young Kim transfers photographs of nautical charts onto colored glass. The surface is traversed by fine lines that hint at latitude and longitude and other symbols for navigation but avoid any specific markers. The works evoke the bird’s-eye view from an airplane window, where the sea drifts past during transcontinental flights, putting passengers in a disoriented, transitional state. Kim is interested in the relativity of space and time from the perspective of a transcontinental traveler, tracing both inner and physical distances. Her works reveal questions of belonging, longing, and the fluidity of identity. The materiality of glass, with its transparent yet solid properties, reflects a sense of in-betweenness and detachment. At the same time, the texture and scale of the works create a tactile presence, giving the impression that they could be held and used for navigation. The sometimes rounded corners and parchment-like color are reminiscent of historical paper maps, here translated into glass.
