“What does the future for storage hold?” (2025) is an installation composed of everyday objects and organic objects such as bones, smartphones, corals and metal castings, which Nicolás Lamas relates to each other in a glass-fronted industrial refrigerator as a cabinet. This creates hybrid fossils that are fused from industrial, handmade and organic elements. The different materialities initially appear to be at odds with one another, but on closer examination they reveal similarities in form and content. In his works, the artist analyzes and deconstructs the relationship between human and non-human objects and the associated power structures that determine how we perceive, interpret and interact with our environment. Here, the refrigerator stands for a system of order, an area of regulation in which different elements and disordered processes can coexist. The individual sculptures are heterogeneous assemblages that can conduct open dialogs about transience, hybridity and a holistic view of the world in this shared space. In this way, “What does the future for storage hold?” raises questions about hierarchy and ephemerality and the separation of culture and nature. For the artist, the individual elements have a power of their own that renders the distinction between man-made and organically grown obsolete. “Through these encounters, I try to relativize the function and value of things and open up other ways to redefine their existence.”
