“Cabin Temperature” is a series of glass works by Ju Young Kim, engaging with her artist book “Air Conditioned Hours”. The book presents photographs taken from Kim’s perspective as a transcontinental traveler. Accompanied by texts by the artist and Guillerme Vilhena Martins, based on diary entries, conversations, and observations, it explores themes of temporality, transience, and displacement. In “Cabin Temperature”, Kim adapts the photographs from the book and transfers them into glass using a technique uniquely modified to her practice. The images focus on the functional details of air travel showing ventilation systems, tray tables, and monitors, revealing the standardization and intimacy of the aircraft cabin. Each work adopts the form of an airplane window, turning the gaze back into a controlled environment of transit. Wave-like irregularities within the glass affect the clarity of the images, introducing a sense of motion. Through this surface modulation, Kim draws attention to how perception is shaped by the material conditions of looking. “Cabin Temperature” explores how contemporary mobility operates through design, repetition, and regulated comfort, translating the visual logic of global travel into a reflective, fragile surface.
