Natacha Donzé's painting “Digestive rug” (2021) sets a process of image recognition in motion that mixes fragments of stereotypical objects and places in our society. Here, the artist abstracts the pattern of the U.S. Senate carpeting onto a bright green background, combining the geometric grid with organic-looking elements reminiscent of cell structures, amoebas, seeds, or beans. Donzé often uses bold colors in her canvas works - as in Digestive rug - and depicts recontextualized or simplified objects that allude to the power symbolism of corporations, government agencies and religious organizations. By arranging individual pictorial elements without hierarchy, she deconstructs these power structures and develops a visual language in which abstracted signs and symbols fragmentarily represent our contemporary society. The title refers to the domestic contexts of origin and opens up associations with food intake and cycles of exploitation. Oscillating between microcosm and macrocosm, the pictorial elements can be simultaneously read as enlargements of microorganisms as well as glimpses into outer space. Themes such as the transformation of nature by man, gender-specific aesthetics, and the representational mechanisms of advertising, lifestyle, and technology implicitly resonate in her paintings and lend them a political dimension.
