"Ziggy and the Starfish" (2016–2018) is a video work by Anne Duk Hee Jordan that foregrounds the sexual diversity of marine life. The piece offers new perspectives on potential non-human role models by focusing on the love lives of octopuses, sea slugs, and starfish. Seeing through the lens of non-human life forms creates an intimate and yet alien atmosphere–a shimmering, almost hallucinatory panorama of fluid desire. The central questions revolve around transformation, adaptation, and identity:How will sexuality evolve when the ocean is getting warmer? What does reproduction mean beyond binary categories? Ziggy–a reference to David Bowie’s queer alter ego–meets the starfish as a symbol of radical self-transformation. Jordan weaves biological narratives with artistic imagination, inviting us to rethink existing concepts of nature and gender.
