The edition of risograph prints is part of the series “Irma Watched Over by Machines” (2024), in which Troika translate video footage of wind-battered palm trees during Hurricane Irma into a painterly composition. At close range, the motif dissolves into a pixelated surface based on the specific color grid of the digital RGB color space. The dominant green tone of “Irma Watched Over by Machines” results from its decomposition into color mosaics in accordance with digital image data, in which there are twice as many green pixels as blue or red ones. The effect of the digital image, which counteracts the increased sensitivity of the human eye to green tones, is adopted by Troika: they imitate the technical mode of vision of the camera and translate its logic. In doing so, the discrepancy becomes apparent between the objectification of the destructive event through neutral, technical recording and the image content, which depicts a natural disaster and evokes emotional associations.The translation of Troika’s work into risograph print itself becomes a machinic act, in which precise color values are determined and printed onto paper as individual layers. The artists examine how digital information transitions into physical reality and how both realms influence one another.
