In his offset print “APRIL” (2020) on newsprint, Lou Jaworski reflects intensively on the mechanisms of perception, grid structures and the definition of the term “image”. The artist uses the common newspaper printing process on halftone screen to create a gradient that changes from dark to light paper of a german newspaper. The work consists of solid black lines, the strength of which decreases continuously towards the lower edge of the picture. In the upper area, the black color dominates, while the white space emerges below. This creates a moirée effect, an optical interference in which two grids overlap and the image begins to flicker. Upon closer inspection, this structure appears abstract and synthetic, while from a distance a uniform overall picture emerges. Through the course of the lines - which can suggest light and shadow – a mountain range emerges in the center, leading the viewer to habitually read the work as a landscape picture. Jaworski questions with “APRIL” the classic concept of the picture by making the technical requirements of the picture into its actual content, thus quoting the genre of the landscape picture in an abstract way. The work can be read two ways either with the black area at the top or at the bottom and thus has two different installation possibilities.
