The body of work of the One Hundred Poets is inspired by the body of work of the same title by Katsushika Hokusai and refers to 100 poems selected by Jürgen Partenheimer from his 100 favorite poets of different times and cultures. Unlike Hokusai, Partenheimer doesn’t refer back to a canonistic collection of poems. Instead, he has chosen poems that he has come across throughout his long-standing interest in poetry and which he has rediscovered or discovered for the first time, providing him with “fuel” for new visual renderings. Or, as the artist puts it himself: “The subjective impulse for each chosen poem expresses a congenial feeling. It is the intuitive awareness of the movement of thought and its symbolic meaning, the fractal nature of its complexity, whose utmost emotion is stimulated in the text as much as in the image. Language as score, inwardness and psyche are transformed into imagery. All doubts are repealed by the acceptance of illusion.”
