In the wall piece “Dystopic heritage” (2022), Nicolás Lamas combines a historical photograph of an ancient excavation site with an image of a modern garbage dump on which disused car tires rise up like geological formations in a barren landscape. Through this visual fusion, the artist addresses the continuity of human intervention in landscapes - from the construction of cultural centers to the creation of mountains of waste. Lamas' works emerge from the interplay of opposing forces - nature and technology, order and decay - and give rise to hybrid images that cannot be interpreted in a linear or unambiguous way. In his works, he breaks down rigid concepts of linear progress and brings together art, science, technology and everyday culture by drawing on a pool of collected images and objects. In this way, the collaged works form a new perspective on their original contexts and offer the possibility of constantly drawing new conclusions from the past, which forms the basis for imagining a possible future.
