"tmi" (2021) is a work from Brigitte Kowanz's series of installation cubes designed as small mirrored cabinets. The title of the work, written by the artist in neon, is repeated, superimposed, and condensed, creating a visual maelstrom. Kowanz uses acronyms, common abbreviations of English phrases such as tmi – too much information, which are used in everyday digital messages, to illustrate the extent to which digital progress is also changing language. The acronyms symbolize the speed and internationality of today's communication and are additionally encoded by the handwriting, as the letters are not easy to decipher. The work thus combines the transmission of information with a formal aesthetic in which light is not merely a neutral vehicle for the content, but plays a decisive role in shaping it. The artist said: "Light, space and language are initially intangible media. Many of my works are about creating constellations in which these media make each other visible and tangible, manifest themselves and at the same time reveal their self-reference. Only in their manifestation do light, space and language become real.”
