Founded in 1879, the Art Institute of Chicago is one of the oldest and largest art museums in the United States. Its encyclopaedic holdings span five millennia and are especially renowned for French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, American art and modern European painting, with works such as Grant Wood's American Gothic and Georges Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte.
