Båda kanonerna är krigsbyten tagna i Ryssland 1581 och 1621 och fördes till Gripsholm 1623. Slottet har fått sitt namn efter Bo Jonsson Grip som under senare hälften av 1300-talet uppförde den första borgen. Slottet skänktes under sen medeltid till ett kartusianerkloster som grundats i Pacis Mariae - Mariefred. Vid reformationen drogs klostret in till staten och 1537 började Slottet uppföras med Henrik von Köllen som byggmästare. Slottet byggdes på Gustav Vasas initiativ och utgjorde en del av ett nytt nationellt försvarssystem. Samtidigt uppfördes Slottet som en representativ bostad för renä…
