Grunden lades på 1560-talet, bland annat med hjälp av tegel från Alvastra klosterbyggnad. Slottet var i Brahesläktens ägo fram till 1680 då Per Brahe d.y. dog. Då drogs grevskapet in till kronan. Mellan 1716-1718 hyste slottet krigsfångar. Det sägs vara dessa som var ansvariga för att slottet totalförstördes i en brand 1718.
