Går även under namnet Älvsborgs slott, pga borgen som en gång låg vid älvmynningen. Den första borgen byggdes av trä någon gång före 1366. Under Erik IV:s styre byggdes den om till stenborg. Under 1600-talets andra hälft förlorade borgen sin betydelse, då mer tidsenliga befästningar byggts, och den användes därefter som stenbrott. De idag synliga lämningarna härrör från renässansborgen.
