Loftet upfördes i början av 1500-talet av bergsmannen Stig Hansson. Byggnaden fungerade som sommarhus och gäststuga och inrymde även en visthusbod på nedervåningen. Loftet tillhörde en kringbyggd bergsmansgård med härstamning från 1400-talet. Kronofogde Jakob Brandberg restaurerade Ornäsloftet under 1700-talets första hälft, från vilken tid den nuvarande trappuppgången samt spånklädseln och fönstren härrör. Ornäsloftet ägs sedan 1897 av staten.
