År 1552 inleddes kronans utvinning av silver ur det än idag så mäktiga Biskopsberget (Stollberget). Trots att järnhanteringen var den mest betydande, premierades silverhanteringen. Silverbrytningen upphörde 1754. Handelshuset Jenning & Finlay, som tog över, inriktade produktionen på järn. I slutet av 1800-talet inleddes brytning av bly- och zinkmalm och 1918 av limonitmalm.
