Vid Wättingeströmmen, som forsen hette först, anlades redan på 1500-talet en hammarsmedja. Under tidens lopp följde en såg, krutkvarn, kopparhammare, pappersbruk, väveri, valsverk och kvarn. Namnet Nyfors fick forsen på 1850-talet då pappersbruket med samma namn anlades. I dag kan vi se endast vissa grunder till verksamheterna och området är kulturhistoriskt minnesmärke. Den gamla disponentvillan från pappersbrukstiden finns kvar, nu privatägd.
