Den större delen av runstenen har varit känd sedan 1600-talet. Av de två mindre delarna har den ena legat som trappsten vid ett torp i närheten, det andra hittades 1930 vid västra brofästet vid Åltomta bro. Sannolikt har stenen stått rest på västra sidan av ån, alltså i Ålands socken. Det första namnet har inte kunnat tolkas. Holmfrid var ett vanligt kvinnonamn under vikingatiden och medeltiden. Namnet Ioger förekommer på ytterligare sju runristningar, sex uppländska och en sörmländsk.
