Läckö var under hela medeltiden ett viktigt säte för biskopen i Skara. Det nuvarande slottet började uppföras under 1400-talet. I egenskap av Biskopsgård drogs Läckö under reformationen på 1520-talet in till kronan och fungerade då som en stödjepunkt för kungen på hans resor genom riket. I början på 1600-talet förlänades Läckö till Jacob De la Gardie och tillhörde släkten De la Gardie till och med reduktionen på 1680-talet, då Läckö återigen hamnade i kronans ägo. Därefter har Läckö kungsgård varit en arrendegård
