Hjälmshult drogs in till kronan av Indelningsverket vid reduktionen på 1680-talet. Bostället anslogs först som ryttmästareboställe men kom senare att tjäna som majorsboställe. Huvudbyggnaden är från 1743 och byggd efter Eberhard Carlbergs ritning till "Ryttmästare och Capiteins Caracters Byggning".
