En hamn med anor. Sjöfart och handel har under lång tid bedrivits i Oxelösund men när järnvägen från Bergslagen blev klar 1877 tog hamnverksamheten fart på allvar. Mest exporterades trävaror och malm från gruvorna i Bergslagen medan kol från England dominerade på importsidan. Redan 1899 fanns 14 ångkranar med 3 tons lyftkraft och fartyg på 10 000 ton DWT kunde med 106 hamnarbetare lastas på tre dagar.
