Möckelmossen är Stora Alvarets största sjö och tillhör ett av södra Ölands stora besöksmål. Till skillnad från vätarna håller alvarsjön öppet vatten året om. Vattenytans storlek varierar däremot kraftigt mellan olika årstider. Under våren och snösmältnigningen, eller efter kraftiga höstregn kan arealen i Möckelmossen uppgå till ca 30 hektar. Under sommarens torrperiod är däremot stora områden helt torrlagda.
