1861 invigdes Göteborgs första folkbibliotek, instiftat av brukspatron James Dickson i ett av Dicksonska stiftelsens hus i Haga. 1897 blev biblioteket så stort att det fick flyttas till ett nybyggt jugendhus på Allégården Södra Allégatan 4 (bilden), ritat av arkitekten Hans Hedlund. 1967 flyttade biblioteket till den nuvarande byggnaden vid Götplatsen.
