Byggnadsverksamheten kom igång 1901 och har eg. inte slutat förrän det sista fortet togs ur krigsorganisationen 31/12 1997. Fästningens kärna består av fem fästen eller fort insprängda i urberget. De fem forten är Degerbergsfortet, Mjösöfortet, Gammelängsfortet, S Åbergsfortet och Rödbergsfortet. Den första skarpskjutningen med fästningsartilleriet ägde rum 1907 med pjäserna på Gammelängsfortet.
