Malmen togs från Utögruvan i Stockholms skärgård och fraktades via Bollsta masugn till Gålsjö bruk. Järnbruket utvecklades efterhand mycket beroende på lyckad rekrytering av vallonsemeder, vallonsläkterna de Wahl och Boija har dominerat bland smederna. Den sista stångjärnshammaren tystnade 1892. Sista smedjan i verksamhet brann 1947. Från 1975 drivs Gålsjö bruk som konferens och fritidsgård.
