Man började grundgrävningarna år 1654. Byggherrre Carl Gustav Wrangel, arkitekt Caspar Vogel, Nicodemus Tessin d.ä. hade dock sett över Vogels projekt och förbättrat det. Den östra delen av slottet stod färdigt 1658. De egentliga byggnadsarbetena avslutades år 1671, man fortsatte med några mindre arbeten, man började också att arbeta med trädgården. Bygget upphördes 1677, året efter Wrangels död. Slottet ärvdes av äldsta dottern som gifte sig med Nils Brahe och på så vis kom slottet i Brahes ägo.
