Stora Sjöfallets nationalpark inrättades 1909. Syftet var att skydda det berömda vattenfallet, som heter Stuor Muorkkegårttje på samiska, och den omgivande ståtliga fjällnaturen. 1919 beslutade riksdagen att bryta ut hela sjösystemet ovanför vattenfallet ur nationalparken. Omfattande vattenkraftsexploatering har därefter skett i flera etapper och vattenfallet har förlorat sin storhet.
