Drottningholms Slottsteater, byggd 1766, är världens äldsta i ursprungligt skick bevarade teater vars scen och maskineri fortfarande används. Teatern finns sedan 1991 upptagen på UNESCO:s världsarvslista. Scenens maskineri, helt i trä och handdrivet, medger upprepade snabba dekorationsväxlingar inför öppen ridå. Det finns ett trettiotal mer eller mindre fullständiga scenbilder bevarade, samt åsk- och vindmaskiner och rörliga vågor. Sedan 1940-talet ges ett trettiotal föreställningar per år, främst opera och balett från 1700-talet, med musicerande på autentiska instrument.
