Kyrkan är belägen på en gammal samisk kyrkplats. Det rektangulära långhuset är byggt i timmerkvistkonstruktion, dvs kyrkan är en sk blockpelarkyrka vilket innebär att långsidorna har timrade strävpelare. Jukkasjärvi kyrka är som sådan den enda bevarade i vårt land. 1747 brädfodrades ytterväggarna. 1783-85 utfördes en stor restaurering, som bl a omfattade ny inredning och byggande av läktare. Närmast följande restaureringar utfördes 1890 och 1907. Interiören restaurerades 1953-54.
