Klostret grundas troligen någon gång under 1160-talet, ungefär samtidigt med andra nunnekloster som till exempel Vreta inom den katolska Cistercienserorden. År 1527 tas ett beslut i Västerås om att Sverige ska bli protestantiskt och klostret i Vårfruberga stängs. Tre år senare anlägger kung Gustav Vasa en kungsgård på platsen. Kungen använder för övrigt det före detta klostret som kvarter under sina återkommande resor i Mälardalen. Kort efter att Gustav Vasa gör sin sista visit i klostret 1547 härjas byggnaderna av en våldsam brand och får sedan förfalla. På senare år har vissa utgrävningar s…
