År 2000 var det 200 år sedan den första slussleden i Trollhättan stod klar. Detta innebar att fartyg kunde gå hela vägen från Vänersborg, vid Vänern, till Göteborg, på västkusten. Redan på 1500-talet fanns planer på att med hjälp av slussar göra hela Göta älv segelbar från Vänern till Västerhavet. Det dröjde dock till år 1800 innan den första genomgående slussleden stod klar. De viktigaste nybyggnaderna av slussarna gjordes 1844 - sedan Göta kanal öppnats mellan Östersjön och Vänern - och 1916, då nuvarande slussar togs i bruk.
