Det nya centrumet byggdes i rasande fart på 50-talet eftersom det gamla på andra sidan järnvägen underminerades av gruvdriften och inte längre bedömdes vara säker mark att vistas på. Efterkrigstidens folkhem var en social och politisk vision av stora mått. Rättvisa och trygghet, välfärd, folkfostran och demokrati skulle byggas in i det svenska samhället och förändra svenskarnas vardag i grunden.
