En av landets äldsta och under medeltiden mest betydande städer. Domkyrkostad och gammal universitets- och lärdomsstad som vid 1800-talets slut växte ut till industristad. Det välbevarade medeltida gatunätet, ett fåtal medeltida byggnader ovan jord och den delvis bevarade stadsvallen berättar om stadens storhetstid. Bebyggelsen representerar den skånska byggnadstraditionen och växlar från små envåningslängor till monumentala, rikt formade offentliga byggnader och hyreshus. Av betydelse är vidare parker och planteringar samt bostadsbebyggelse för olika sociala skikt.
