De äldsta delarna av byggnaden härstammar från tidigt 1200-tal. På näset mellan Ivösjön och Oppmannasjön anlades då ett premonstratenskloster. 1584 skänktes Bäckaskog till kronprins Kristians (IV) guvernör, Henrik Ramel. Han och hans son Henrik Ramel d y gjorde under sin tid, 1584-1653, om det forna klostret till en befäst slottsanläggning. Bäckaskog fick då sin nuvarande utformning med den kringbyggda gården. De västra hörntornen byggdes upp under denna tid. Den danska ätten Ramel ägde godset fram till 1677. 1685 gjordes Bäckaskog till översteboställe vid Södra Skånska Kavalleriregementet. K…
