Gården Hammarby, strax utanför Uppsala, köptes av Carl von Linné 1758. Han ville ha en gård på landet som lantbruk, änkesäte och som en tillflykt från Uppsalas osunda miljö. Efter Linnés död bodde hans änka Sara Lisa permanent på Hammarby till sin död 1806. Gården fanns i familjens ägo tills 1879 då staten köpte Hammarby med Uppsala universitet som förvaltare.
