Alexander Brook (1898, Brooklyn, NY – 1980, Long Island, NY) was a teacher, art critic, and artist known for his paintings. He studied at the Pratt Institute and the Art Students League of New York, where he later became a teacher. His realist works garnered acclaim and awards, earning him the Carnegie Prize in 1939. In his tenure as assistant director of the Whitney Studio Club, which would later become the Whitney Museum of American Art, he advocated the importance of representational contemporary American art through his curation. Brook’s works are in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; Museum of Modern Art, NY; Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Art Institute of Chicago, IL; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, PA; and the Huntington Library, CA.
