> Eugène Atget's study of the elegant Empire-style facade of this storefront on the fashionable rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré captures only one phase in the architectural history of a building originally constructed in 1776 as a double private house. This section was sold in 1787 to an apothecary, who probably transformed the front of it into a shop. When Atget photographed the structure in 1902, the original windows with small panes had been replaced by plate glass, and the building served as an antique store. By 1920, having been briefly a dress shop, the place was dilapidated. The arrows that fan out in the upper glass had mostly lost their vanes, the arched lettering had been removed, and the retail space stood empty.
