Die Radierung zeigt eine Wöchnerin mit ihrem schlafenden Säugling; am Fußende des Bettes zwei ältere, ebenfalls schlafende Kinder, im Vordergrund links der Vater im Halbprofil, der seinen Kopf aufgestützt verzweifelt vor sich hinstarrt. Auch seine Frau blickt müde ins Leere. Diese Darstellung ist die heute bekannteste Arbeit, in der Kollwitz Arbeitslosigkeit als Folge der Industrialisierung thematisiert.
