Andrea Mantegna probably made this print for the founding of the Church of Sant’Andrea (1472) in Mantua, Italy, which housed a relic of Christ’s blood. Christ stands between Saint Longinus, who brought the relic to Mantua, and Saint Andrew, who discovered its burial place. Mantegna was among the first Italian painters to create engravings of his own design. The engraving’s parallel, diagonal hatching, bold outlines, soft brownish ink, and subtle transitions mimic his pen-and-ink drawings.
