Jewelry was seen as a display of wealth and fashion in the Victorian era, just as it is today. Therefore, it’s not surprising that upper-class Victorian photocollagists created ornate images of jewelry on the pages of their albums, inserting photographs in place of precious stones. One’s sweetheart, a dear friend, or a familiar couple might fill the center of a pendant. From the earliest days of photography, upper-class Victorian women also wore actual jewelry—such as lockets, pendants, and brooches—that incorporated photographs. In this way, a woman could keep a concealed or visible image of her loved one close to her heart, whether that person was still living or had passed away. Carolyn Peter, J.
