Vuotuinen tapa syntyi vastareaktiona Nikolai II:n vuonna 1899 hyväksymälle Helmikuun manifestille ja sitä tulevina vuosina seuranneille sortotoimille. Valokuva on otettu Nikolainkirkon (nyk. Suurkirkko) suunnasta. Taustalla näkyvät Aleksanterinkatu 20, 22, 26. oikealla myös Sofiankadun pää.
