Jan Toorop beschouwde het portret dat hij tekende van zijn biechtvader pater Raaijmakers, leraar staathuishoudkunde aan het Canisiuscollege in Nijmegen, als het meest 'diepe' dat hij ooit had gemaakt.Toorop had in zijn Nijmeegse jaren, van 1908 tot 1916, veel contact met hem. De pater kijkt met zijn heldere ogen de beschouwer recht aan. Hij vond dat hij zelf niet over de uiterlijke gelijkenis kon oordelen, maar dat 'het ideaal van zijn ziel' erin lag.
