Friedrich Constantin "Fritz" von Stein (1772-1844) war der jüngste Sohn von Charlotte und Josias von Stein und ein Liebling Johann Wolfgang von Goethes. Unter anderem unterrichtete Goethe ihn in der Zeichenkunst, in der beide dilettierten. Das vorliegende Blatt gehört zu einer Gruppe von Haus- und Landschaftsstudien, die wohl im August 1821 in der Gegend von Karlsbad entstanden sind (III-13527a, III-13527b, III-13528r). Ursprünglich für eine Karriere in Weimar bestimmt, war Fritz von Stein 1810 zum Generallandschaftsrepräsentanten des schlesischen Adelsverbandes ernannt worden, was ihm sein Auskommen sicherte.
