Die tropische Flusslandschaft mit hohen Palmen entstand möglicherweise als ein Reflex auf Goethes Austausch mit Alexander von Humboldt oder seine Lektüre der Reiseberichte von Fernao Mendes Pinto - 1809 ist erstmals im Tagebuch die Rede davon, dass er bei der Lektüre zeichnete (Maisak ²2001, Nr. 160, S. 217). Die Bezeichnung von der Hand Johanna Schopenhauers verweist auf eine Entstehung der Zeichnung im Rahmen der von ihr in Weimar abgehaltenen Soiréen, bei denen für Goethe ein eigener Zeichentisch reserviert war. Noch ein weiteres Blatt im Bestand des FDH entstand, der Bezeichnung nach, im Rahmen des Salons von Johanna Schopenhauer (vgl. Inv.-Nr. III-15093). Das vorliegende Blatt erweist sich dabei zumindest in Teilen als eine Kopie nach Claude Lorrain (vgl. externe Bezugsobjekte).
