Südliche Landschaft in queroblongem Format. Ein von Hügeln gesäumtes Gewässer mit der Andeutung einer Stadt am Ufer. Im Vordergrund mittig platziert ein Baum sowie einige Felsen als Repoussoir. Die kontrastreiche, eine lichterfüllte Landschaft suggerierende Lavierung lassen an die zeittypische Mode der Transparentbilder denken, deren Gestaltung sich auch Künstler wie Caspar David Friedrich und Karl Friedrich Schinkel gelegentlich widmeten. Für Goethe lassen sich zwei als "Lichtschirme" getuschte Mondschein-Landschaften nachweisen (Ausst.-Kat. Berlin 1861, Kat. 56, S. 44).
