Friedrich Constantin "Fritz" von Stein (1772-1844) war der jüngste Sohn von Charlotte und Josias von Stein und wurde als Kind von Goethe mit besonderer Aufmerksamkeit und pädagogischem Interesse bedacht. Unter anderem unterrichtete Goethe ihn in der Zeichenkunst, in der beide dilettierten. 1955 erwarb das FDH insgesamt 17 Blatt Zeichnungen von Fritz von Stein aus dessen Nachlass. Das hier gezeigte Aquarell entstand 1788 bei Jena und folgt in der Komposition holländischen Vorbildern.
