This series of images of George Reynolds, Thomas Eakins's student at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, comes from what Eakins called his "naked series," studies of the human form in successive shifts of weight and posture. Each subject was photographed in seven standing positions in the following sequence: *Profile, heels together, hips straight Profile, right leg bent Profile, left leg bent Front, arms behind head or back, legs straight Front, with legs bent Rear, knees together, legs straight Rear, left leg bent* The images were intended for use by drawing students in order to help them achieve greater accuracy in representing the human figure. Mounted together, they form a dynamic composition, with the frontal middle image creating a central axis from which the other poses seem to emanate.
