Vor malerisch-ärmlicher Kulisse zeigt das Bild einen kindlichen Wettbewerb um Körpergröße. Anekdotenreich wird der vergebliche Versuch eines Knaben geschildert, gegen ein größeres Mädchen anzukommen, dem der kleine Mann aber selbst auf Zehenspitzen kaum über die Schulter reicht. Sentimentale Genrebilder dieser Art fanden auf dem auflebenden Kunstmarkt des 19. Jahrhunderts allerorts dankbare Käufer.
